the Kalahari Desert, Botswana, Namib Desert in Namibia and south-western Angola and in South Africa
Fun Facts
- Active and social animals, meerkats live in groups that can include as many as 30 individuals
- They take turns doing look out duty for predators
- Vision is their most developed sense. They have dark patches around their eyes to cut down glare from the sun and help them see far into the distance
- They have a membrane that can cover their eyes to protect them while they are digging
- The Meerkat society is generally dominated by one male and female pair who are the only pair allowed to breed
Diet
Meerkats primarily eat insects, such as grubs and termites, but will also eat small vertebrates, eggs and some plant matter. They dig up roots for water. They are very possessive of their food and defend their prey from other members of their pack.
